How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

If your doctor disposes of that you have symptoms of sleep apnea, you may be asked to have a sleep valuation with a sleep specialist or may order an overnight sleep study to neutrally evaluate for sleep apnea.

  • Testing cover an overnight sleep study called a polysomnogram (PSG). A PSG observes in a sleep laboratory under the direct guidance of a trained technologist. During the test, such as the electrical activity of the brain, a mixture of body functions, muscle activity, eye movements, heart rate, airflow, breathing patterns, and blood oxygen levels are recorded at night during sleep. After the study is completed, the number of times breathing is defective during sleep is register and the harshness of the sleep apnea is indexed.
  • For adults, a Home Sleep Test (HST) can sometimes be performed alternative. This is an altered type of sleep study that can be done in the pleasure of home. It records some body functions other than PSG, counting airflow, blood oxygen levels, breathing effort, and snoring to confirm a diagnosis of tolerance to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

An HST is not applicable to be used as a screening tool for patients without symptoms. It’s not using for patients with serious medical issues (such as neuromuscular disease or moderate to severe pulmonary disease, to severe cardiac disease, heart failure, ). It’s also not used for patients who have other sleep anarchy (such as central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, or narcolepsy) in addition to the suspected obstructive sleep apnea.
